Liam Dunbar "The beta"

is a new freshman at Beacon Hills High School, Mason's best friend and a Beta werewolf in Scott's Pack. Liam is loyal, extroverted, sometimes cocky, but has severe anger issues. Liam's step-father, Geyer, is an administrator at Beacon Memorial hospital. Liam transferred to Beacon Hills High after being kicked out of Devonford Prep. He violently damaged his lacrosseCOACH'S car with a crowbar. Liam was diagnosed with I.E.D., after being sent to a psychologist for an evaluation. Liam is Scott's first Bitten Beta werewolf.

Liam first appears in "Muted", excelling at lacrosse practice, but is accidentally injured by Scott. Scott immediately helps bring Liam to the hospital. Liam comes into the supernatural world when he's held hostage by Sean Walcott, a wendigo. Scott attempts to rescue him, but Liam is thrown over the hospital roof. Sean has Scott's arms pinned during the fight, so to save Liam from falling to his death, Scott catches Liam with his fangs, Biting him, transforming Liam into his first Beta. bilities begin to manifest. At Lydia's lake house, Scott's Pack meets with Liam, they attempt to gain his trust and debrief him of their supernatural status. Liam angrily snaps at their behavior, losing control of his animal side, fully transforming into his werewolf form and running out into the Preserve, but Scott and Chris Argent effectively subdue him. Terror-stricken at what's happened to him, Liam tearfully admits he deserved getting kicked out of his old school. He fears his parents seeing him as a monster. Scott tells Liam that "(he)'s not a monster, (he)'s a werewolf like (him)". Afterwards, Liam is inducted into the Pack, being taught everything supernatural and developing a big brother-little brother rapport with Scott.

In "I.E.D.", Liam faces off against his old school rival Brett Talbot during the lacrosse season's pre-season scrimmage. Scott and Stiles keep Liam under control during the game, but they learn that their teammate Garrett is an assassin, and is targeting Brett who's also a werewolf of the Alpha Satomi's Pack. Liam is then kidnapped by Garrett, and dying of a wolfsbane laced wound. Liam remembers Scott's training on being a werewolf which gives him enough control over his werewolf side to let out a howl which allows Scott to find and rescue him. Liam eventually develops enough control outside of the full moon. In "Time of Death", Scott tells him he doesn't have to get involved in the plan of catching 'the Benefactor' if he doesn't want to. Liam decides he's not afraid and wants to help. Liam and Kira face off against Kate's Berserker, but they're overpowered and Liam develops PTSD afterward, having hallucinations of the Berserkers. Later on with his price on the Dead Pool being moved up to $18 million because of Derek's removal and the attempted assassination at the bonfire, the stress starts to get to him. Liam admits his fears to Scott, saying he's not like his Alpha, how he and the others put their lives on the line, trying to save people. In "A Promise of the Dead", Liam struggles, but he is helped by Brett, with his former rival snapping him out of his phobia, telling him he is alive, and that he's lucky to have Scott as his Alpha. In "Smoke & Mirrors", the full moon is approaching, but Liam insists on coming to save Scott. Liam perfects control when Stiles has him recite Satomi's mantra. When Scott is under Kate's control as a Berserker, Liam gets through to Scott, using the same words Scott said to him; "you are not a monster, you are a werewolf, like me", which breaks the Berserker transformation, saving his Alpha's life.
